  1. Vancouver, Help Keep Their Dreams Alive

By Vancity Buzz  2 years ago

Ninetenn-year-old Starlight teen Matthew is travelling to Vancouver attend the Men’s Gold Medal Olympic Hockey game on February 28th after his wish to attend the Games was granted by the Starlight Children’s Foundation, a non-profit children’s organization dedicated to brightening the lives of seriously ill children and their families. Today, Starlight learned that the complimentary accommodation that had been booked for him and his have been cancelled by Norwegian Cruise Lines as they were schedule to stay on the floating hotel the cruise line had promised to provide.

After being booked and confirmed months ago, Starlight received notice today that the wheelchair accommodating suite that had been booked for Matthew, his twin brother and his parents is no longer available due to the cancellation of the ship.

Matthew’s Cerebral Palsy means he spends his day in a power wheelchair and, as a result, he needs washroom, bedroom and living facilities that are fully accessible.

Starlight is now seeking a suitable alternative in which to book the family from February 25th to March 2nd. The Starlight Children’s Foundation touches the lives of seriously ill children and their families over 44,000 times each year in BC. If you can help, please contact Heather Burnett at (604) 786-7827 or email [email protected]

If you know anyone that can help or just want to help spread (via twitter) the word please do so.  Much appreciated and Vancouver lets make help keep these kids alive.

  2. McDonald’s Lamp Post Vancouver WTF?

By Vancity Buzz  2 years ago

Did anyone see this? Apparently this McDonald’s lamp post was one block east of 6th and Cambie back in September. The location is probably the reason why many did not see this as it  isn’t exactly a pedestrian hub. Nonetheless, it’s a neat little idea delivered by the good people of Cossette West in Vancouver.
This lamp post which looks like a pot of coffee being poured into a cup is great and it was meant to advertise McDonald’s foray into the coffee world back in September. I liking this latest burst of creativity coming from the ad agencies out west. The upside down display GAP display on Robson Street was also pure genius.

Well the groundhog has spoken and it looks like we’re in for another 6 weeks of winter. You can hear the folks at VANOC cheering from my office, then they look up at Cypress and realize the groundhog lied. Oh well Old man winter lives. Just not in Vancouver ha!

  5. The Simpsons Curl Their Way to Vancouver 2010

By Vancity Buzz  2 years ago

Well it looks as though The Simpson will finally make the trip to the west coast of Canada in an episode which features Marge and Homer in a curling team competing in the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic games.
The episode is set to air February 14th and is just another addition of media exposure Vancouver will be getting for hosting the 2010 Olympics. This (and also Stephen Colbert coming up north) is the kind of advertising you simply can’t buy and is hard to quantify the impact it will have. At the very least it  will make Vancouver more of a household name, especially to our geographically challenged neighbours to the south.

  6. BC’s "You Gotta Be Here" Commercial

By Vancity Buzz  2 years ago

The latest commercial promoting British Columbia to the world is eerily similar to the ones California ran last year amidst the economic crisis. Similarity aside I like this, I mean how can you hate Michael J. Fox? However, they could have added a few other celebrities, Nelly Furtado comes to mind, Emmanuelle Vaugier (not real big but a Vancouverite), Kristin Kreuk etc… It would have also brought some diversity into the cast, you know like B.C. is diverse. Nonetheless, great clip.

What do you guys think of this commercial? Any other B.Cer’s you’d like to see on it? This is the longer version, the 30 second clip can be viewed here.
