Troy McLaughlin: I Have a Dream – A Dancer’s journey to freedom
8:00 pm - 9:30 pm
823 Seymour St
Vancouver, British Columbia
In celebration of Black History Month, New Works brings back to the stage audience favourite ‘I Have a Dream’. This poignant and moving piece by Vancouver-based dancer and choreographer Troy McLaughlin follows a dancer at a crossroads in his journey to freedom; it incorporates dance, live music and storytelling to look back and honour the growth of tap, jazz and Broadway styles in North America.
‘I have a Dream’ highlights and acknowledges the artists and leaders that had a crucial role in the road to freedom for Afro-descendants in North America in the late 19th Century, and early 20th Century, culminating in the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s. It draws inspiration from Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, Sammy Davis Jr., Dr. Jeni Legon, and the legendary Dr. Martin Luther King and his “I Have a Dream speech”, which led a nation to a path of liberation.
Troy McLaughlin will, without a doubt, enlighten and entertain. He will be joined on stage by musicians Carlos Joe Costa, John Howard, Wayne Stewart and Langston Raymond, singer Krystle Dos Santos and dancer Natalia McLaughlin. ‘I Have a Dream’ premiered as part of New Works’ Dance Allsorts in 2014.
