Trade, Democracy and Investment: A Convo with Paul Manly
7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
West Mall Rm 2200
Proponents of modern trade agreements say they are needed to keep trade flowing and protect foreign investors. The reality is that almost all trade agreements include investor state dispute settlement provisions. These provisions undermine the democratic authority of citizens, and the governments they elect, by allowing foreign corporations to sue for potential loss of profits.
NAFTA, CETA, the Canada-China FIPA, and now the TPP – the acronyms may differ but the agenda is the same.
Join MP candidate for Nanaimo-Ladysmith and Green Party International Trade Critic Paul Manly for an eye-opening presentation about why these agreements are a bad deal for Canadians, and the better alternatives we need to work toward. Co-hosted by SFU professor and Green Candidate for Burnaby North – Seymour, Lynne Quarmby.
