Risk Management for Parks and Recreation

Since 2013, there have been seven (7) large liability losses brought against municipalities based on a claim of improper care of municipally owned playing fields. The claims included injuries suffered on ball diamonds, soccer fields and one lacrosse field. Statements of claim ranged from $200,000 to $7.5M and all but one of the losses have (or will) be settled by way of a substantial payout.
Due to a rise in the number of liability losses citing improper care of playing fields, BMX/Skate Parks, waterfronts and trails, the instructor Doug Wyseman, was asked to develop a training program to assist municipalities in balancing the risks and rewards of summer use of parks.
The Managing Summer Risks training workshop examines the legal requirements necessary for departments to avoid liability losses, while leaving acceptable risks in your parks.
Some of the information included in the program:
– Legal responsibilities….yours and the users
– User Agreements
– Effective signs for the property
– Sample written maintenance and inspection policies
