Kirk Douglas originated the role of McMurphy on Broadway, the charming rogue who contrives to serve a short sentence in an airy mental institution instead of in a prison. What he doesn’t bargain for is Nurse Ratched, a rigid disciplinarian who rules patients by taking advantage of their weaknesses. McMurphy, an anti-authoritarian at heart, quickly sees the ‘therapy’ for what it is and encourages his fellow inmates to revolt against the arbitrary rules and regulations, even arranging a rollicking midnight party with liquor and girls. A showdown between McMurphy and Nurse Ratched leads to both tragedy and liberation. The film version won 5 Academy awards including Best Picture in 1975.
