Maeve is a record label run by two Irish men, Mano Le Tough & The Drifter. In an age of endless releases and labels Maeve aims to release beautiful, special records that will last in the hearts of the public.
Mano Le tough and The Drifter come from the small town of Greystones in Ireland. Friends since the schoolyard, they found they shared a huge passion for music. After an adolescence spent playing in bands together they got involved in Dublin's club scene, where an appetite for DJing, running club nights, and electronic music started.
A move to Berlin ensued for Mano, to concentrate on music and production, only to be joined by his friend 2 years later. They then started Passion Beat – first at Kleine Reise, now at Loftus Hall – a monthly night they have curated for over two years, and which has earned a very loyal following. Maeve is the latest project from these two old friends.
Over the past few years, Mano Le Tough has become one of the shooting stars of the international dance music scene. His impact has been so great that Kristian Beyer of Ame claimed recently in an interview that: Thanks to Mano Le Tough, I have no fears for the future of House. And not just Beyer, the entire Innervisions gang including Ame and Dixon have become fervent supporters of Mano Le Toughs warm and melodic, yet driving sound.
Who is the man behind the music that currently inspires established DJs and music fans alike around the globe?
Niall Mannion as Mano is known to his parents, is originally from Greystones, a seaside village near Dublin, Ireland. After an eclectic musical youth and a move to Berlin, Mannion first popped up on the electronic music radar in 2009 with an ep on legendary disco Viking Prins Thomas Internasjonal label. With his unique mixture of modern disco, atmospheric house and electronica (although musical genres like these do not quite capture the essence of Manos music; he prefers to describe it as cool songs or Folkal House which seem in some way more appropriate), Niall quickly gained massive interest in his music. So it was no surprise that eps on such acclaimed labels as Tensnakes Mirau imprint, Dirt Crew recordings and Ben Watts Buzzin Fly followed his remarkable debut. In no time Mano also became a much sought after remixer for the likes of Aloe Blacc , Midnight Magic, Flowers and Sea Creatures and Roisin Murphy.
That Mano also knows his onions as a DJ has been proven over the years at his monthly party in Berlin called Passion Beat, which he runs with his old friend and fellow paddy The Drifter (with him and their friend Baikal they also set up their own label Maeve in 2012 ). With his ever growing reputation, he soon got heavily booked worldwide and became a regular in some of the best clubs in the world including Panorama Bar, Trouw and Robert Johnson. All of his great experiences as a musician and artist culminate now in Mano Le Toughs first long player, Changing Days on Permanent Vacation. Fully aware that the album format is still the most important statement of a musician, Mano succeeds in this field with flying colors by not falling into the obvious traps of making a dance album with 11 songs that all seem to sound that same. Similar to his labelmate and buddy John Talabot Mano manages to expand his stylistic palette to more than just dance or club music. Instead he creates his own distinct sound and musical vision with bittersweet melodies and atmospheric moods that should appeal to ravers and more pop trained ears alike. On the album Mano brings to perfection what he began to explore on his last few eps, especially by using his own voice as a unique musical instrument and as a transmitter to communicate with his audience.
The Drifter is Mark Flynn, an Irish producer, dj and singer. After an upbringing dabbling in different musical pursuits, from bands and choirs to folk and traditional, a love for electronic music was born from ventures into Dublin nightlife. A move to Berlin ensued soon after.
He released his first solo work, the 'Lovers' EP on Permanent Vacation in late 2012. It received excellent feedback, James Murphy from LCD Soundsystem calling the E.P ” really nice, gentle and strong.” The A side “Day and Night” featured on Ruede Hagelstein's Edition of the Watergate mix series. His own vocals on the EP caught the attention of some of his peers, resulting in him recording vocals for Jacob Korn, Slow Hands, Erdbeerschnitzel, Good Guy Mikesh & Filburt, and Baikal. Further remixes for Woolfy vs. Projections, Uma, Ships and Slow Hands side project Male Madame have made him one to watch.
The Drifter's dj style, like his productions, definitely lean towards the hypnotic, melodic and emotive side of electronic music. No matter what genre he is playing. House, Techno, Disco. He learned his craft from hours of djing in bars and clubs and running clubnights. One such clubnight was Passion Beat, a night he ran in Berlin for over 3 years with his buddy Mano Le Tough. It gathered a loyal, steady following and quickly became known for it's two residents and the guest artists they booked. His reputation as a dj has steadily grown and brought him all over Europe.
He runs the record label Maeve together with two of his close friends, Mano Le Tough and Baikal. All three share a similar passion for deep emotive music, and the label has quickly become one to watch, releasing music from Baikal, and remixes from Ripperton and Dixon. Maeve EP's from both Mano Le Tough and The Drifter will be coming very soon.
2014 is shaping up to be a big year for The Drifter. A couple of EPs for Permanent Vacation are on the way, as well as a track featuring on the label's “If This Is House Give Me Your Money Back” compilation. And of course there will be a release on his own Maeve imprint.
