Karen Magnussen was born and raised in Vancouver, and trained at the North Shore Winter Club. She was World Figure Skating Champion in 1973, Olympic Silver Medallist in 1972 and a five-time Canadian Champion. On leaving competitive skating, Karen headlined the Ice Capades showfor 4 years. She then began her coaching career at the world renowned North Shore Winter Club in North Vancouver, alongside her former coach, Linda Brauckmann. She taught Provincial, National and International level students throughout the 80’s and 90’s, sharing her dedication, passion, talent, and love of the sport.

In November 2011, during an early morning skating session, the NSWC facility suffered a serious ammonia leak. While escaping the arena, Karen’s lungs were burnt. Now suffering from many serious health issues from her exposure, Karen is no longer allowed in an ice rink and will never skate or coach again.

At 6pm on March 14th, 2015, the Richmond-based Connaught Skating Club is hosting the KAREN MAGNUSSEN TRIBUTE: A BENEFIT SHOW, showcasing 100 incredible competitive skaters. Our goal is to pay tribute to Karen, an incredible lady and Canadian hero, while raising money to help her through this very difficult time. The Silent Auction will commence at 5pm.
