Four Nepali students studying at B.C. universities are joining forces May 29 in an evening of cultural sharing and celebration. They hope to raise awareness and funds for six villages in the Himalayan regions of Nurbi and Sindhupalchowk (among the hardest hit by the Nepal earthquake), to get a helicopter with supplies to their families and villagers. The event will take place from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at St. Mark’s Anglican Church in Kitsilano, Vancouver.

“I am very sad that at this stage I cannot go back to Nepal to be with my people during this tough time,” says Tashi Dolma Lama, a fourth year Quest student from Shyo village in Nubri. “But we want to help our families and villages—many of the homes have been damaged or destroyed by the recent earthquakes,” shares her sister Nangsal.

Tenzin Sherpa, a SFU student from Solukhumbu is concerned that “Many villagers are living in the fields with no blankets or tents, food is scarce, and the monsoons are coming.”

“I am worried that rescue measures will not reach these remote high-altitude areas. Even before the earthquake, village life in the Himalayas was tough,” explains Dechen Lama from Lho village who studies at the University of Victoria. “There are no roads and our villages don’t have access to proper medical care and schools.”

Because there has been so much sad and devastating news coming from Nepal over the past three weeks, the students decided that they want this evening to be about celebration and hope. They want people to have fun and join in learning about their culture and land.

Please join the students and friends in an evening of Nepali customs, cooking demonstrations (yes, they will teach how to make momos!), stories, song, slideshows and a documentary film called Beyond the Gates of Phu. The event is by donation ($20 cash suggested) and there will be prizes and fantastic local and Nepali silent auction items up for grabs, including photography prints from Himalayan villages. Refreshments will be provided and Nepali snacks are available for sale. 100% of funds raised will go to the Himalayan villages of Shyo, Lho, Hinang, Gomnang, Shala, Rhip and Tatopani.

Admission by donation ($20 suggested)
