Vancouver launches the first BC Darkness Into Light fundraising event for suicide and self-harm awareness and prevention.Darkness Into Light Vancouver would like to invite you to The Emerald (555 Gore Ave, Vancouver)
on Wednesday April 8th from 5.30pm to launch it’s first DIL 5km walk. This will be Vancouver and British Columbia’s inaugural Darkness Into Light walk and we hope the first of many. The walk will take place in association with our local charity partner the BC Crisis Centre, our corporate sponsor Vancity and Irish charity Pieta House on Saturday, May 9th at Burnaby Lake Park. Join us to be part of something truly special!
Darkness Into Light is a unique, early morning experience which begins in darkness at 4.45am as thousands of people walk or run a 5km route across the world while dawn is breaking. Darkness Into Light is now in its seventh year and last year’s event attracted 80,000 participants in 39 locations across the globe. With the number of locations doubling this year, organizers are expecting over 100,000 people to take part. 80 venues will host the event in Ireland, Australia, Canada, England, Scotland and the USA. Darkness Into Light is a people’s event organized by local committees all over Ireland and abroad. Although the number of people walking has never been greater, neither has the need. The addition of Vancouver as a location this year shows how Darkness Into Light is uniting people across the globe in solidarity with those who suffer. While suicide is a devastating tragedy, we mustn’t forget that there is hope.
While Darkness Into Light raises much needed funds, it is also about awareness, solidarity and local communities. Walkers/runners are encouraged to speak to the person beside them, tell a story or simply say hello, connect and acknowledge one another. Make your presence known. No one should walk alone.
Vancouver’s Darkness Into Light event will set off from Burnaby Lake Park. Online registration and further details are available now at www.darknessintolight.ie. For more information on Darkness
