Vancouver, British Columbia

The Belonging Project will be holding a launch event to celebrate and discuss the idea of belonging in Vancouver. The event will be held at Untitled Art Space in Chinatown and will include an art exhibition, a community engagement art activity (button trading), a screening of the Belonging Project’s videos, and a panel presentation featuring the video participants, the project’s partners and project director. The Belonging Project is funded by the City of Vancouver in partnership with Immigrant Services Society of British Columbia. The Belonging Project is an ongoing community oriented video-series aimed at exploring Vancouver’s reputation of being an unfriendly city. In the Vancouver Foundation’s “Connections and Engagement” survey, one in four surveyed reported feeling more alone than they would like. The Belonging Project aims to address this statistics by exploring what makes individuals feel they belong in Vancouver through first person narratives of migration and settlement. Through six intimate video portraits, the Belonging Project introduces viewers to the stories, struggles, and strategies of six Vancouverites to show how those most likely to feel alone and disconnected create a sense of belonging in Vancouver. Everyone is invited to attend, light refreshments will be provided.
