      Food is almost an afterthought at most pubs. Yes, there are pubs that treat food with the same importance as the drinks but for the most part, it’s usually a mix of generic burgers, sandwiches and maybe a bowl of pasta or two. When you’re drunk, either everything tastes good or you just want something big, greasy and covered in cheese. That isn’t to say that bars need to start serving fine dining plates with a pint. That would be equally weird as pub food should be simple and straight-forward but simple doesn’t mean it should be terrible.

    2. New Vancouver Restaurant: Rainier Provisions

      I’m not a morning person. Days off usually mean sleeping in and as such, lunch usually happens a little later in the day. Unfortunately for me, it seems like the rest of Vancouver gets up early even on long weekends, or at least they have lunch earlier than 2 p.m. to get at the roast suckling pig at Rainier Provisions, the latest in the Heather Hospitality Group’s Gastown-based restaurants. The pork sold out during the lunch rush and the meatloaf quickly followed.

    3. New Vancouver Restaurant: Nosh

      “Yes, we have tables in the restaurant.” Usually this call is to see if a restaurant has tables available but in the case of Nosh, a new rotisserie restaurant in Kitsilano, it’s to check if there are tables there at all since their menus have the word “take-out” plastered all over them. Take-out isn’t a problem but I live in Richmond, which means getting take-out from Kits results in either my food getting cold or me reinforcing several driver stereotypes so I had to check before I gathered some friends to head to Nosh.
