Vancouver could be getting an official tree

What’s Vancouver’s official tree? Stumped? You should be. As shocking as it sounds, in a city covered in so much green, we don’t actually have our own official tree.

Thankfully, Vancouver Park Board Chair Sarah Kirby-Yung has twigged and she’s putting a new motion to the board on Monday night, in hopes of rooting out an official tree.

“I was amazed when I found out Vancouver didn’t have an official tree,” Kirby-Yung told Vancity Buzz. “It’s such a huge part of who we are… It seems like an oversight.”

If the motion passes, the board will allow the public to nominate tree species for consideration, then the official tree of Vancouver will be selected by an expert panel.

Vancouver’s official tree would be announced during the city’s Tree Week next April.

Kirby-Yung says she’d like to say she loves all trees equally, but there are some which stand out at different times.

“You have the majesty of the West Red Cedar, which stands the test of time,” said Kirby-Yung.

“You also have the cherry blossoms, which make people smile. People love them because they’re so fleeting.”
