Vancouver Giants expected to announce move to Langley tomorrow

The Vancouver Giants may have played their last game at the Pacific Coliseum.

The Giants have called a media conference for tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. at the Langley Events Centre, where it is expected that they will announce plans to relocate to Langley.

The move to Langley has been rumoured for a few months now, and as we reported back in March, relocating comes with a few unknowns.

“When you look at it at first glance, it defies logic for the Giants to go from the Pacific Coliseum to a much smaller venue like Langley” Tom Mayenknecht of TSN Radio told Vancity Buzz in March. “They wouldn’t be contemplating this move unless there were key business drivers that they felt they could no longer achieve at the PNE and an arrangement at the LEC might be more conducive to.”

How many fans will the Giants lose by moving 38 kilometres away from their current home at the Coliseum? How many new ones will they gain?

With rising housing costs in Vancouver and the number of families moving to the suburbs growing every year, perhaps the family-friendly Giants are making the right decision.

The LEC, which opened in 2009, is home to the NLL’s Vancouver Stealth and the Langley Rivermen of the BCHL. The WHL Giants would clearly be the most high profile tenant in the building’s history.
