Pigeon Park might soon look very different if the Vancouver Parks Board votes to move forward with a revitalization project being presented at a meeting on Monday evening.

Proposed changes to the park, which is popular among residents of the Downtown Eastside, include installing a creatively decorated needle disposal box, adding in community art projects, adding more plants, and creating a waste management plan.

Shayne Williams with Lookout Emergency Aid Society tells Vancity Buzz that he thinks it’ll be a positive improvement if the demographic that uses the park is considered in the plans.

“People that use the park right now live in the neighbourhood and it’s important that they have a nice space to go to that they can enjoy and we’d like to see the redevelop be very thoughtful for the residents that are currently accessing the space,” he says. “As long as they’re mindful and the folks are represented at the table – as long as the goal is to make the park look nicer and better for the people who are currently using the park, I think there isn’t a lot of risk.

Williams adds the park is vital for people living in cramped SROs to be able to gather, socialize, and enjoy outdoor space.

“It’s certainly a meeting spot in the summertime for people to have a conversation, and it’d be nice to have some sheltered areas for folks in the wintertime.”

Pigeon Park – also known as Pioneer Place – earned its name after it became a popular hangout for locals to feed pigeons for more than 50 years. The park went through a major renovation back in 2009.

Parks Board commissioner Michael Wiebe is presenting the motion along with Stuart Mackinnon.
