Letter from the Editor: It's been nearly 8 years, and we're just getting started

If you’re reading this post, then chances are that you are one of the millions of people who read an article on Vancity Buzz every month. But while you’ve probably heard of us, you might not know how our story began.

The site you’re reading right now is very different from the one that originally went live in 2008, when two friends in a South Vancouver basement decided to start a blog to share their love for this city, its people, and the amazing things that happen here.

Since then, we’ve been privileged to be a part of Vancouver’s recent history. When the world came to the city for the 2010 Winter Olympics, we took to the streets, to look at how Canadians were celebrating our home and native land. When the 2011 Canucks Stanley Cup run took place, we united to cheer on our hometown team, and when things got rough, we banded together to show what being a true Vancouverite was all about – and that this was our city. Most recently, we decided to take matters into our own hands with the help of some outstanding local partners, and after 13 years without a New Year’s Eve celebration, we spearheaded Canada’s largest festival to ring in 2016, drawing over 80,000 people to the downtown core in the process.

At its inception, Vancity Buzz was a passion project, designed to celebrate what makes our home remarkable. And eight years later, it still is. The site you’re reading has evolved into something we couldn’t have imagined all those years ago. But at its heart, Vancity Buzz is still about Vancouverites sharing their love of their city, it’s just that there’s a lot more love to go around these days.

Today, that South Vancouver basement has become a downtown office. And those two people who started a blog have since become a team of 23 full time staff, with dozens more contributors who help to create the content you read on our website each and every day. Our team comes from every corner of Metro Vancouver, and indeed the world, bringing together a combined 75-plus years in media and journalism. But no matter where they’ve come from, everyone here shares the same passion for our city.

And so do you.

Millions of you in fact whose support has made this publication what it is today. Some of you have been on the journey with us since the beginning; others might have only recently joined the party. But every single one of you shares the same passion for the city and its people that made us start Vancity Buzz in the first place.

We’re not a traditional media outlet, and we’re proud of it. Instead, we do things a little differently, offering a perspective on Vancouver that you won’t find anywhere else.

It hasn’t happened overnight. We’ve tried things and succeeded. We’ve also made mistakes along the way, and learned from them. Throughout everything, however, we’ve listened to what you wanted Vancity Buzz to be. Because this publication has never been about us, it has always been about you, our readers.

Since the beginning you’ve supported us – and that’s something we will always be thankful for. Now we’re calling on that support again as we get ready to take the next step in our evolution.

Vancity Buzz is changing, but who we are and what we do isn’t. We’re taking a big step forward to something new, but we aren’t forgetting where we’ve come from. We hope you’ll join us on June 1 as we unveil the next chapter in our celebration of your city.
