When Jordan Harvey suits up for his next game, he will set a new club record for games played with Whitecaps FC.

Harvey, who tied Gershon Koffie’s 133 MLS games record in last Saturday’s 2-1 win over the Portland Timbers, has been a reliable defender for the Whitecaps for parts of six seasons now.

On with Don Taylor and Bob Marjonovich of TSN Radio yesterday, Harvey explained what this accomplishment means to him.

“It’s just an honour, it’s an amazing organization, a great group of guys,” said Harvey.

The 32-year-old Californian left-back was acquired during Whitecaps FC’s inaugural season from the Philadelphia Union. He was a big reason why defence became the club’s calling card last season.

And now he’s scoring goals, too.

After going goalless last season, he has found the back of the net twice this season.

Goals are fun, but that’s obviously not Harvey’s strong-suit. A veteran of 224-career MLS games with Colorado, Philadelphia, and Vancouver, Harvey has just 10 goals to his name.

What the ‘Caps can rely on is consistent defending, game-in and game-out.

Having continuity with a player like Harvey, who is not only solid on the field, but charismatic off of it, has been important for the Whitecaps as they continue to solidify themselves with the casual sports fan in a crowded marketplace.

“It’s really been a great last five or six years here. It’s very rare in MLS that guys hang around a team longer than three years, so yeah, I take it as quite an accomplishment.”
