Watching wildfires tear through the community of Fort McMurray in Alberta over the past few days has been heart-wrenching.

And with so many residents forced to abandon their homes and businesses – many of which have been destroyed – Vancouverites want to help.

Below are a few ways you can help Fort McMurray.

Canadian Red Cross

  • Text REDCROSS to 30333 to donate $5 to the Canadian Red Cross or make a donation of any size online. The federal government will match donations made to the Red Cross.

Donate at BC Liquor

  • BC Liquor stores are also accepting donations in support of Canadian Red Cross relief efforts in Fort McMurray, in multiples of $2 and $5.

Donate at Safeway

  • All Safeway’s locations are accepting donations in support of Canadian Red Cross relief efforts in Fort McMurray – and will match the amount raised up to $100,000.

Donate with a drink

  • Gringo’s Taco Bar and Dixie’s BBQ are donating $1 for every drink purchase between now and Sunday, May 8, to the Canadian Red Cross to help disaster relief in Fort McMurray.

Donate at Save-On-Foods

  • The grocery store chain is accepting donations – in cash or points – to help support Red Cross relief efforts in For McMurray. (They’re also offering displaced residents in need of emergency prescription refills access to their files at any store.)

Donate at a 7 Eleven

  • The chain of convenience stores is converting its National Coin Box campaign – those canisters you usually see on the counter – to collect for the Red Cross Alberta Fires Fund.

Donate at a Real Canadian Superstore

  • This national chain of hypermarkets is accepting cash donations of any size in store to help Canadian Red Cross relief efforts in Fort McMurray. (The company has already committed $300,000 in cash, food, water, and essential health supplies.)

Head to a charity BBQ

  • What: M&M Food Market in Richmond will be hosting a charity BBQ this Saturday in support of the Fort McMurray relief fund. Swing by and enjoy a hamburger or hot dog by donation. 100% of funds raised will go to the Canadian Red Cross.
  • Where: M&M Food Market (formerly M&M Meat Shop) – 7020 Francis Rd, Richmond
  • When: Saturday, May 7, 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Join a Facebook community
