English Bay beach chair rentals may be approved by Parks Board tonight

Imagine never having to lug chairs to the beach again – well, that might soon be a reality if a motion is approved tonight to allow beach chair rentals at English Bay.

The Vancouver Parks Board announced they were actively searching for companies to facilitate the rentals back in March. Blue Hole Investments, a Canadian-based hotel management company, was chosen and now the full report will be presented to Parks Board commissioners at Monday evening’s meeting.

The city would receive up to 18% of the gross annual revenues generated from the rentals, according to the report.

“It’s something that’s available at other beaches around the world, so why not English Bay?” Parks Board Commissioner Sarah Kirby-Yung told Vancity Buzz in March. “It’s one of the world’s top urban beaches, so that seemed like a perfect location for a trial.”

If the pilot program is approved and is deemed successful, chair rentals could hit other Vancouver beaches sometime soon.
