The area in and around the Canada Place pier in downtown Vancouver will be a busy hive of activity throughout most of the day as 13,300 cruise ship passengers are expected to arrive at the terminal.

Passengers will be embarking and disembarking the Celebrity Solstice, Norwegian Jewel, and Crown Princess between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. today. Demand for public transit and taxis is expected to spike, and the roads near the terminal will be congested.

According to the Port of Vancouver, there will be additional staff and traffic police to assist with passenger inquiries and direct pedestrian flows at nearby crosswalks.

Several high volume days at Canada Place are expected this cruise ship season. This occurs when three cruise ships are berthed at the pier at the same time to load and offload passengers.

The next high volume dates are next weekend from Saturday, May 14 to Sunday, May 15 when six cruise ships are scheduled to arrive. A total of 24,500 passengers are expected during this period.

The port expects 830,000 cruise ship passengers this season, which represents a three per cent increase over the passenger volumes experienced last year. Each cruise ship that calls at Canada Place creates over $2 million in local economic activity from the spending of cruise ship companies to restock their supplies after each sailing and passenger spending at hotels, restaurants, shops, services, and transportation.

Of special mention, the Disney Wonder will be making 14 calls to Canada Place this year. The first call this season for the vessel is on Monday, May 23, another high volume day.
