Five men have been charged following a string of sex assaults in Metro Vancouver, some violent in nature, after joint investigations by several police detachments.

The assaults happened in Burnaby, North Vancouver, and on the UBC Endowment Lands from January through April. In all but one of the incidents, the assaults were committed individually.

One of the alleged attackers is a youth.

The assault charges are as follows:

  • Jason Anthony White is charged with assault and break and enter and breach in relation to an April 7 offence in Vancouver.
  • Michal Popek is charged with four counts of sexual assault, and one count of break and enter in both Vancouver and Burnaby.
  • Yuan Zhi Goa is charged with one count of break and enter with intent to commit sexual assault.
  • Vaughan Englot is charged with three counts of sexual assault in relation to incidents in North Vancouver.
  • A youth has been charged with two counts of sexual assault, two counts of indecent act, and one count of assault related to several Vancouver offences.

“These men committed violent acts against women in our communities – women who should feel safe to walk, work, and go about their business without being victimized, or being concerned for their safety,” says Superintendent Mike Porteous with the Vancouver Police Department. “As a result of the courage of these women to come forward and tell their story, we have been able to take a number of these violent offenders off the street.”

Police departments in Burnaby, Vancouver, North Vancouver, and UBC worked together to identify the offenders.

The Real-Time Intelligence Centre of BC did intelligence checks on all the suspects, while the RCMP’s Behavioural Sciences Unit analyzed years worth of data to narrow in on the suspects.
