Just over a month after Vancouver hosted the men’s World Rugby Sevens Series for the first time, the best women’s sevens players are on Vancouver Island this week. The World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series begins in Langford on Saturday.

If the tournament is anything like the one we witnessed at BC Place, those in attendance at Westhills Stadium are in for a treat.

The women’s tournament consists of 12 teams divided into three groups. Canada will have games against Japan, Ireland, and England on Saturday, with the knockout round taking place on Sunday.

Just like men’s sevens, this is a new Olympic sport that will debut this summer in Rio. Canada ranks third in the World Rugby Sevens standings this season, and punched their ticket to Rio last May.
