Good news pie lovers, Chinatown’s The Pie Shoppe is expanding into East Van with its second location.
Located at 1875 Powell Street, The Pie Shoppe, co-owned by sisterly duo Stephanie and Andrea French, is slated to open sometime in June.
At 1,200 square feet, The Pie Shoppe’s new digs are nearly four times the size of the original space on Gore Street. With more elbow room and oven space, Stephanie and Andrea plan to pull out most of the equipment from the original shop, and relocate it to the new space, so they can centralize production.
The larger space will also “lend itself to many interesting ventures,” says Stephanie. Indeed, it will allow The Pie Shoppe to grow their menu with new items, as well as host more pie making workshops and a series of collaborative longtable dinners, which are planned for the winter months.
The menu at the new Powell Street shopfront will reflect the one offered at the Chinatown locale, with a similar array of freshly baked pies and coffee. Patrons who drop by can expect to find a range of seasonal creations (think rhubarb pie in spring), mainstay items (chocolate pecan pie), and savoury selections, like braised bison or oven roasted chicken pie, which can be taken home to bake.
Understanding that their new set up is situated in a rather industrial area of Vancouver, where breweries dominate the landscape, Stephanie reveals that she and Andrea will look into partnering up with a brewery or two, to supply menu items like hand pies and empanadas.
While The Pie Shoppe’s new East Van expansion grants customers a roomier space to stop and linger, Stephanie is adamant that The Pie Shoppe will remain “small” and “intimate.” Stephanie reveals that their main mission is to “continue to make quality pies with really nice ingredients.”
