10th annual Spot Prawn Festival includes dockside feast, black tie gala, cooking classes

Get ready to get your fill of B.C.’s favourite seasonal seafood: Spot Prawns. The 10th annual Spot Prawn Festival will take place Sunday, May 15, 2016, but this year will be preceded by two exciting inaugural spot prawn events.

First up will be the Spot Prawn Gala at the Vancouver Club on May 13. The black tie, six-course gala celebrates 10 years of educating locals and visitors about this Pacific Northwest delicacy, and will feature food prepared by six top chefs from across Canada, including Vancouver’s own Ned Bell and Angus An. Each course will showcase the delectable BC spot prawn. Tickets to this gala are $200, with proceeds from this elegant event benefitting Ocean Wise.

On Saturday, May 14, the culinarily minded can gather at the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts (PICA) to learn how to purchase, store, prepare and cook spot prawns during a one-hour class and Q&A session. The class has six time slots available.

Of course, the main event is the free public festival on the Sunday, which includes the big Spot Prawn Boil. Taking place again at The False Creek Fisherman’s Wharf, limited tickets to the boil are $17.50 (plus taxes and fees) will go fast.

The wildly popular Spot Prawn Festival is put on as a fundraiser for the Chefs’ Table Society of British Columbia, a group that provides financial support to the local culinary industry. This year’s chairs are Chefs’ Table Society of BC members chef Ryan Bissell and chef Robert Clark. We spoke to Bissell ahead of last year’s fest about how fantastic spot prawns and the CTS are.
