Neil Patrick Harris will be living in Vancouver for the next months to film the television series version of A Series of Unfortunate Events.

Production for the 13-episode series at South Vancouver’s new Ironwood Studios began on Monday and is scheduled to continue until August 12. The series is being produced by Paramount Pictures as a Netflix Original Series.

Over the weekend, just before production was set to begin, Harris and his husband David Burtka celebrated their 12th anniversary together at Tofino on the west coast of Vancouver Island.

The series, based on the books of the same name written by Daniel Handler (also known as Lemony Snicket), tells the story of orphaned siblings Violet, Klaus, and Sunny who are forced to live with their villainous uncle Count Olaf after their parents are killed in a fire. Olaf, played by Harris, desires the fortune of the parents and attempts to steal their inheritance by committing murders.

The last time the books were adapted for a major screen production was in the 2004 movie with Jim Carrey playing Olaf. It also starred Merryl Streep, Jude Law, Timothy Spall, and Catherine O’Hara.

Harris is best known for his starring roles in Doogie Howser, M.D. and How I Met Your Mother and hosting the Academy Awards and the Tony Awards.

At this time, the premiere date for Netflix’s series adapting the 13 books has not been announced.

Other television series filming in Vancouver this spring include Arrow, Bates Motel, DC: Legends Of Tomorrow, Dead Of Summer, Impastor, Once Upon A Time, Prison Break Revival, Supernatural, The Flash, Van Helsing, Wayward Pines, and Zoo.

It remains unclear whether Fear The Walking Dead, the spinoff to The Walking Dead, will return to Vancouver for more filming. The production is currently filming in Baja California, Mexico.

A number of original streaming series are also being filmed in Vancouver, such as Netflix’s Haters Back Off, Hulu’s Shut Eye, and Amazon Video’s The Man In The High Castle.
