Purging your closet ever so often is a must, but it’s particularly topical for Spring where “out with the old, in with the new” is the mantra of the season.

If you’re like the most of us, this can be a daunting task, so we turned to fashion stylist and brand consultant Elim Chu to give us her profesh approach to tackling the closet.

How to purge your closet for Spring like a stylist

1. Consolidate

Consolidate all your clothes into one area before starting. If you have more than one closet (guilty), or have outerwear sitting in a front closet, bring it all together before you begin your purge. It’ll help you see the big picture of what you have in a single visual snapshot.

2. Look at each piece in good detail

Look at every piece. Try it on. Observe how you feel in it. If you feel good and can see the “one hundred and one” ways to wear it, it’s a keeper and deserves a place in your closet.

3. Examine wear and tear

Is it stained? Worn out? Piling? Identify if it can be repaired or refreshed at a tailor, dry cleaner or cobbler

4. Donate, consign, gift, or refresh

One person’s “trash” is another’s treasure. Have bins or space designated for the following:
Donation: clothing that cannot be consigned
Consignment: branded and like new or gently worn
Gift: for someone in your friends or family circle
Updating/refreshing: items you love but needs love from the tailor or cobbler

5. Catalogue for next year

Once you’ve completed your purge for this season, put a system in place for next year. For items that are hung, flip the hanger after each wear so you can track what you’ve worn. This will help you identify which items you reach for most after each season.
