A cappella groups have always held their own space within popular music, even before shows like Glee and Pitch Perfect put a spotlight on the genre. From church choirs to university a cappella clubs and barbershop quartets, it has always been there. Pentatonix, however, is propelling the genre into a brand new space by becoming the first main stream a cappella group in recent years.

First gaining popularity by winning the singing competition show The Sing-Off in 2011, the group has gone on to produce multiple viral Youtube videos, win two Grammy awards, and release seven albums including their latest self titled LP featuring completely original material; a first of it’s kind.

With the stage production and charismatic effect of a top tier pop star, Pentatonix opened the show with their original tracks “Cracked” and “Na Na Na” from their new album. The audience, comprised mostly of young girls and their families, knew every lyric from their music and enthusiastically sang along.

Self described as music industry underdogs, the five members of Pentatonix came from total obscurity to where they are now and often showed their gratitude by recognizing and thanking their audience throughout the night. Much to the crowds delight, each of the extremely talented members of the group had a chance to show off a little during the performance as well. Highlights being Avi Kaplan’s demonstration of his opera training and Kevin Olusola’s throwback performance as a beatboxing cellist.

Other memorable moments from the evening included the performance of the emotional ballad “Rose Gold,” the cover of Justin Beiber’s “Where Are Ü Now,” and the group’s much loved Daft Punk medley which is also their most popular video on Youtube clocking in at over 191 million views.
