The last time G-Eazy came to perform in Vancouver was in 2014. Booked as an early show at Fortune Sound Club on a Saturday night, the then up and coming rapper performed to a low key crowd of just about fifty people.

Fast forward two short years and G-Eazy is back performing his sophomore album, When It’s Dark Out, to a sold out crowd at the Pacific Coliseum on a Wednesday night. Any way you slice it, that kind of hustle just can’t be denied.

Coming from a tough upbringing in Oakland, California, G-Eazy, also known as Gerald Earl Gillum, started making music while he was going to University in New Orleans. Known for sharing the details of his life through the lyrics of his music, Gillum connects with his fans on a personal level.

Entering the stage with his signature slicked back hair and black kit, G-Eazy jumped right into the intro of his latest album. The stage itself was set up to look like a facade of the hood referenced in his lyrics complete with neon signs, billboards, a strip club, a motel, and a bar. Accompanied on stage by his DJ and a live drummer, Gillum often took short breaks in between songs to banter with the energetic crowd in his charismatic New Orleans tinged drawl; locking in their full attention.

Honouring the classic Bay Area hip-hop genre, G-Eazy’s lyrics, delivery, and flow stood out over the often simpler instrumentals in his music. Highlights from the show included the performances of, “Order More,” “I Might,” and the popular single, “Me, Myself & I.”
