Beauty files: 8 runway makeup trends you need to try now

Comments
Prada SS16

Thanks to Miranda Priestley, we know that runway fashion has a big impact on what we choose to wear. The same goes for beauty: If braids are big in Paris in September, you’ll see them in magazines a couple of months later and on the streets by the following April.

Typically, Spring/Summer is all about pastels and brights and this season is no exception: Nails are pretty shades of lilac, eyes have pops of cobalt blue, and lips are cherry red.

What’s new is the texture; nail colours are shot through with shimmer while lips are most definitely matte. There’s also unusual placement, like bright blue eyeshadow on the inner corners instead of lids. Then there are the out-there trends, like Prada’s bold gold lips. Here’s our pick of the season’s top runway makeup trends, and how to get them.

Want: Matte red lips

Get: Nudestix Intense Matte Lip + Cheek Pencil in Royal

A gorgeous blue-toned red (great for pale complexions), this pencil, from Canadian brand Nudestix, comes in a tin with a sharpener. It can be worn on the lips or rubbed into cheeks as blusher. It has a matte texture, but doesn’t dry out the lips. The downside to the creamy formulation? It smudges easily, so you may want to pair it with the brand’s Blur Pencil, which gives it a bit more staying power. $28 – available at Sephora (in stores and online)

Want: Gold lips

Get: NARS Larger Than Life Lipgloss in Gold Digger

If you really want the full-on metallic lip effect, you’ll need to use eyeshadow or pigment – something like Make Up For Ever’s Metal Powder in Sunflower Gold would do the trick. A more subtle nod to the trend is this NARS lipgloss, which has flecks of gold and rose-gold glitter. Wear it on its own or over any lipstick. $33 – available at Sephora (in stores and online), Hudson’s Bay, Holt Renfrew, and Murale, and www.narscosmetics.com

Want: Blue eyelids

Get: Estee Lauder Limited Edition Summer Glow Eyeshadow Palette

This season eye makeup is not just about the colour (blue, blue, and blue), but also the placement. For a Coachella-inspired look, dot eyeliner or place sequins above your eyebrows and under your eyes. Drawing a bold line across the crease of the eyelid creates a graphic, bold look, or for something more subtle, you can place a dot in the inner corners of your eyes. Chanel took things to the max with blue eyeshadow daubed on like goggles around the eyes and over the bridge of the nose. $55 – available at Estee Lauder counters and online

Want: Dolly lashes

Get: Esqido Amp It Up Lashes

The runway’s insanely long lashes give a look that’s nearly cartoonish. Esqido’s are made from naturally shed mink hairs (the mink aren’t harmed when gathering the hairs, and live in monitored conditions). For application tips, see here.  $49 – available at Esqido.com. Local stockists are listed on the website

Want: Spiky lashes

Get: L’Oreal Miss Manga Rock mascara

Usually we want our eyelashes to be defined, but this season, Marc Jacobs’ models had overloaded and spiky lashes in combination with smudgy blue eyeshadow. François Nars, who created the look, said it showed, “the East Village girl who’s been out all night”. It’s not about clumpy lashes, like you don’t know how to apply mascara. This product gives you spikes, thanks to a special brush with wider-than-normal gaps. It comes in black and blackest black, in waterproof and non-waterproof versions. $11.99 – available at drugstores and mass retailers

Want: Bold brows

Get: M.A.C Big Brow Pencil

Bold brows have been in for the past couple of years, but done badly, they look utterly ridiculous. To help you escape that fate, M.A.C has released how-tos, which you can view here, and a collection of products, Brows Are It. Our favourite is this chubby twist-up pencil, which comes in five shades to suit blondes, brunettes and redheads. It has a waxy texture that helps tame real hairs too.  $25 – available at M.A.C stores and counters, and online

Want: Glowing skin

Get: Laura Mercier Candleglow Soft Luminous Foundation

Image: Laura Mercier

There are only really three different looks for foundation: Dewy, matte or velvety. This season the velvety, glowing look wins, and hooray for that because it’s the one that looks like real skin and is therefore most flattering. This foundation is supposed to make your skin look like it’s lit by candlelight – luminous, without being shiny. It’s a buildable formulation, so covers a multitude of sins, and comes in an amazing 24 shades. $59 – available at Sephora (in store and online) and Holt Renfrew (in store and online)

Want: Pretty pastel nails

Get: CND Flirtation collection

This collection of yummy ice-creamy shades is perfect for wedding season. Our favourites: Lavender Lace, a pale purple with a touch of sparkle; and Aqua-intance, a gorgeous shade of Tiffany blue that would be the perfect accent nail for a bride. The colours are available from both CND’s Shellac gel system, and its Vinylux regular polish collection. $12.50 – available at Onyx Aesthetics Studio
