4/20 clean-up begins at Vancouver’s Sunset Beach

On Wednesday, the smoke rose, and this morning the rain is falling as the clean up begins after yesterday’s 4/20 celebrations at Vancouver’s Sunset Beach.

Garbage is being piled up on the now muddy field behind the beach.

Howard Norman is the Director of Parks Operations, and says thankfully it didn’t rain on Wednesday.

“If it was pouring rain, and it would have been muddy, it could have been like a Woodstock, too as far as the mud, right? But it was fairly hot, so it wasn’t as bad as it could have been if it was soaking wet.”

What if this event had been a permitted one?

“If it’s soaking wet and unplayable – what we call ‘unplayable for sports teams’ – we can close the facility, if we had to. Probably wouldn’t have been that bad, we could have maybe put something more down on the grass, but based on the conditions yesterday, probably the best it could be for this field.”

Nine Park Board staff are busy picking up the garbage left behind by pot enthusiasts.
