The four women of Strapless Comedy have a motto: Live life “Tits To The Wind” and have fun doing it. They showcase this mantra on March 11 at the Evergreen Cultural Centre in their show, Strapless Unstrapped.

We’ve gone through a lot as a group, and I’m excited to see how our work has grown,” said Sidika Larbes. “The audience will see many levels of sketch comedy. It will make you laugh. It will make you think. I’m very proud of how the show is coming along.”

Strapless Unstrapped features 22 silly and naughty sketches performed by Larbes, Jackie Blackmore, Lauren Martin and Iva Kapsikova. There will be a voiceover audition from hell, a butchership quartet, and a Strapless Riverdance, plus sketches on friendship, love, and more.

The comedians met while performing with the Vancouver Film School Sketch Company that Blackmore was directing.

Our first show together was at Vancouver Fringe 2013 and it was a fantastic experience,” explained Blackmore. “We describe ourselves as an all-female Kids In The Hall. We’re having fun and people have connected with us.”

“In our writing rooms, we read out our scripts and make each other laugh. That’s definitely a good sign,” added Blackmore.

Sketch in Vancouver has gone through a resurgence in the last few years, with new groups, regular classes and an annual festival showcasing the comedy style. Strapless used the spotlight of the 2016 Vancouver Sketch Comedy Festival to fine-tune some Strapless Unstrapped segments.

I never thought I’d do comedy until someone invited me to do sketch,” said Martin. “I’m excited to finally do a Golden Girls sketch – they get into trouble in Miami! We crack up a lot in rehearsal.”

Once you commit to taking a ridiculous situation seriously, that’s where the comedy comes from,” Martin observed.

We feel very comfortable together. It’s like working with family, where we have the freedom to do riskier things in a safe space,” added Kapsikova. “All of us are developing our own style, and we’re feeling good about this new show.”
