Daredevils at the University of British Columbia took indoor highlining, similar to slacklining, to new heights inside a campus building last week.

On Friday, the Slackline UBC student club installed a highline three stories up in the atrium of the Nest, the recently completed Student Union Building. Adam Mertens, a co-founder of the club, told Vancity Buzz that the temporary installation cost $1,500 with insurance and having to hire technicians.

“Highlining, like slacklining, is walking a tensioned piece of webbing strung between two anchor points,” said Mertens. “The only difference is that in highlining, the line is at an elevation high enough above the ground that the walker wears a harness for safety in the case of a fall.”

The one-day event of having experienced highliners cross the wire was meant to generate campus awareness about the three-year-old student club.
