Ford has been battling a rare form of cancer called pleomorphic liposarcoma since 2014.

Toronto Mayor John Tory says in a statement that the city is reeling after learning the news of Ford’s passing and that his thoughts are with his family.

“I have known Rob Ford for many years. He was a man who spoke his mind and who ran for office because of the deeply felt convictions that he had. As a councillor, mayor and private citizen, Rob Ford reached out directly to people across the city with a phone call, an offer of advice or support, and I know there are many who were affected by his gregarious nature and approach to public service,” says Tory.

“He was, above all else, a profoundly human guy who presence in our city will be missed.”

Tory adds the city will be working with the Ford family for memorial arrangements. The Ford family is asking for privacy at this time.

Ford was a controversial mayor during his turn in office, in which he admitted to abusing alcohol and drugs while he was mayor of Toronto. He was also caught on video making homophobic and sexist comments numerous times.
