Canucks goaltending prospect Thatcher Demko has been named Hockey East Player of the Year, sharing the award with UMass-Lowell goaltender Kevin Boyle. This is the first time the award has been shared since the 2002-03 season when Mike Ayers and Ben Eaves shared the title.

It is no surprise that Demko won this award as he has been fantastic throughout the entire season for the Boston College Eagles. It is based on his play within Hockey East but when comparing the 2014 2nd round pick to the rest of the NCAA, he measures up extremely well.

The San Diego native had hip surgery this past summer to repair both hip labrums that had been bothering him for many years. There was some concern that he may get off to a slow start due to missing most of the summer due to recovering, but Demko has been great throughout the entire season.

Demko is currently tied for first in the NCAA in save percentage (0.938 SV%) with North Dakota’s Cam Johnson and Yale’s Alex Lyon. He is third in goals against average (1.78 GAA) behind those two, while being first in the NCAA in shutouts with 10.

With those 10 shutouts this season, he set the Boston College single season shutout record, passing former Canucks goaltender Cory Schneider’s record of 8.

Demko was also named to the Hockey East First Team tonight.

Boston College will face Northeastern tomorrow night in the Hockey East Semi-finals at TD Garden in Boston. Canucks prospect Adam Gaudette, is having a great second half, plays for the Northeastern Huskies. The winner will move onto the finals on Saturday evening. Since Boston College is ranked in the Top 10 in NCAA coaches polls, they will participate in the NCAA regionals next weekend and look to make it to the NCAA Frozen Four after falling short last year.
