Not sure what to do in a compromising situation? Would you be able to recognize danger the minute you see it? These are some of the things the Burnaby RCMP will be discussing during a personal safety seminar today.

Police officers will teach attendees about the basic principles of staying safe, as well as practical safety tips, including:

  • Walking in well-lit areas only to stay visible and walking with confidence
  • Avoiding jogging alone in the early morning hours or late at night
  • Switching directions or crossing the street if you think you’re being followed – if the person does follow you, move toward an open store, restaurant, or lighted house. Yell for help and call 9-1-1.

Media relations officer Corporal Daniela Panesar says this seminar is part of the Burnaby RCMP’s safe community series.

“Personal safety is always an issue of importance for everyone so we encourage the community of Burnaby to play an active role and become educated on personal safety by attending this seminar,” she says in a statement.

Since January 29, there have been five sexual assaults in Burnaby. It’s unknown whether all of them share a connection or not, although some share similar characteristics. As a result of these attacks, the Burnaby RCMP created the Sexual Assault Task Force.

If you’re interested in attending, RSVP by calling 604-294-7859, or email crimeprevention@burnaby.ca.
