Work has started on a new public art gallery on the North Shore, just past the SeaBus terminal at Lonsdale Quay. It’s part of a revitalization effort that will turn the coveted waterfront space into a new cultural hub for North Vancouver.

The Polygon Gallery will be 19,000 square feet upon completion, which is scheduled for 2017, including space for galleries, events and community engagement. Most prominent is an outdoor plaza that will offer a new venue for performing arts and music during the summer months. Local Vancouver artists, including Jeff Wall, Ian Wallace, Rodney Graham, and Ken Lum, will be part of the gallery’s focus on contemporary art.

Another notable announcement is the affordable admission fees – priced at $5 for adults, $3 for seniors, and free for youth and children. The fees seem to directly challenge significantly higher pricing at select Vancouver galleries and museums just across the water. The City of North Vancouver seems to be hedging its bets on “cultural tourism,” which the gallery website cites as “a fast-growing and lucrative segment of the North American travel industry, spurred by the retiring baby boomer generation.”

Here are more artistic renderings of the new Polygon Gallery, provided by local architectural firm Patkau Architects:
