BC Place lights up orange to honour Dal Richards

BC Place will turn orange for the next two nights to mark the passing of “King of swing” Dal Richards, who died on New Year’s Eve at age 97.

The Twitter account for the BC Lions announced the glowing homage on Thursday evening, marking the first night of the three the iconic structure would light up orange for the legendary bandleader.

Richards was a known BC Lions supporter and even wrote the team’s fight song “Roar, You Lions, Roar” and was entered into their Hall of Fame in 2003.

The legendary big band leader was born and raised in Vancouver and was honoured with numerous awards, including the Order of Canada, the Order of B.C., and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal. He was also inducted into the B.C. Entertainment Hall of Fame in 1994.

Richards played 79 consecutive New Year’s Eve gigs and had shows at the PNE for over 70 years.
