We’re taking a tasty tour of Vancouver’s many brunches to create The Ultimate Vancouver Brunch Guide. This week we’re digging into classic brunch dishes at Yolk’s Breakfast.

One of Vancouver’s much-loved breakfast spots, Yolk’s Breakfast, has opened up a second brick and mortar location. Situated on West Broadway, near Cambie Street, the new 50-seat locale joins the eatery’s East Hastings digs and popular downtown food truck, and, despite being only open a few weeks, has people flocking from all over the city to order a plate of their famous eggs.

Even before the door has flung open at 9 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, a group starts to gather out the front of Yolk’s newest family member, in the hopes of snagging a table. With so many eager people ready for a breakfast feed, the atmosphere at 546 West Broadway is buzzing from the get-go.

Drawing a casual brunch crowd, Yolk’s provides patrons with a modern, yet comfortable, space to enjoy their breakfast-forward offerings. While some may argue that the tables are too close to each other, I would say that the close proximity adds to the whole laid-back dining experience dished up at Yolk’s.

The breakfast menu at Yolk’s is pretty straight forward. In addition to Belgian Waffles ($9.75), a Tall Stack of Pancakes (9.75), Honey Toasted Granola ($4.50), Organic Oatmeal ($4.75), and Beignets ($8.25), Yolk’s offers their sought-after ‘perfectly poached eggs’. What they’re accompanied by and how they come served, well that’s up to you.

The menu is laid out like a flow chart. Diners pick their protein first: double-smoked bacon, hand-carved honey ham, or portobello mushroom. This preference is then followed by the choice of one or two eggs, and whether you’d like your eggs presented on an English Muffin or a comforting bed of truffle-lemon hashbrowns. The final choice is whether you’d like your eggs topped with either ‘real Hollandaise’ or aged white cheddar.

Diners can also mix up their free-range eggs up by adding a few sides, like the lip-smacking English Bangers ($4). Supplied by Cioffi’s Meat Market and Deli on East Hastings, Yolk’s sizzling sausages are deliciously porky and accompanied by Yolk’s house-made Dijon mustard, which certainly packs a punch.

Also listed on the menu is an all-time brunch favourite, Chicken and Waffles ($13.50). This towering stack is comprised of organic fried chicken, Belgian Waffles, chicken gravy and maple syrup. With so much delicious sauce action going on, Yolk’s waffles never dry out. Diners wishing to go the whole hog can add-on a poached egg and some crispy bacon.

Brunch goers can seal the deal with a range of fruit smoothies, freshly-squeezed OJ, a wheatgrass shot, tea, or refill coffee. Those wanting something a little stronger can opt for either a cold cocktail (house-made mimosas, Caesars, sangria, and fruit punch) or hot cocktail (house-made Irish Cream and Coffee).

Comfortable, affordable and more importantly delicious, Yolk’s offers diners reliably good breakkie fare, in an unpretentious setting.

Yolk’s has a no-reservation policy, therefore, if you’re planning to visit on the weekend, prepare for an inevitable wait. Fortunately, you won’t have to wait out on the street until your table is ready as the host will take down your name and number, and contact you as soon a space becomes available. It’s also worth noting that the restaurant serves the same menu Monday to Friday, so if you have a hankering for Yolk’s during the week just head on over to West Broadway to get your fix. Alternatively, call ahead and order your food to-go.
