TELUS has created the home of the future, a home that utilizes the super-fast fibre optic network through fully connected appliances and tools.

Unlocking doors through facial recognition, smart counter tops that follow the recipe for you and calculate the nutritional value of your meal, and smartphone-controlled heating and lighting are just a few of the innovative new technologies TELUS’ Future Home is equipped with.

The B.C. telecommunications company teamed up with Samsung, Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent to build a temporary home connected to the new fibre-optic network announced by TELUS in October. The network is said to bring the world’s fastest internet to Vancouver through a $1 billion infrastructure upgrade.

Fibre optic networks have virturally unlimited wireless capacities, with download speeds of up to 150mb per second. One fibre optic cable the size of a pencil and made out of glass has the ability to carry an entire world’s amount of internet traffic. They are also not susceptible to damages from weather or storms, increasing their reliability and endurance.

Showcasing just what this kind of internet can do, TELUS’ 560 square-foot Future Home located in Port Coquitlam comes equipped with facial recognition security, a smart kitchen with a nutrition-scanning countertop, a home office with an interactive touch table, smartphone-controlled thermostats and lighting, and an internet-enabled Ultra HD Optik TV.

Anyone is able to tour through the Future Home between Thursday, December 3 and Sunday, December 13. All Future Home visitors will have the opportunity to enter a contest sponsored by TELUS, where they will have a chance to win a prize pack, courtesy of Samsung, which includes a 55” Samsung UHD TV, a Samsung Galaxy Tab S LTE 8.4 and a Samsung Galaxy S6 edge.
