A Richmond woman is in critical condition after she was viciously mauled by an 80 pound Rottweiler cross.

On December 30 at around 1 p.m., Richmond RCMP received a number of 9-1-1 calls about a woman who was being attacked by a dog and desperately in need of police intervention in the 9200 block of Williams Road.

When officers arrived, they found a woman covered in blood on the ground trying to fight off the dog.

“Our officers commented that it was a horrifying sight to bear witness to,” said Corporal Dennis Hwang in a release.

“We see and love dogs as faithful companions and now they were witnessing a scene from their worst nightmare.”

Hwang said one of the officers distracted the dog while the other tried to help the victim. The dog was only momentarily distracted before coming back to attack the victim again, as well as the officer. The officer was then forced to fire her gun at the dog.

The 21-year-old victim suffered over 100 bites to her body as well as a fractured arm and a detached bicep. She’s undergoing surgery and has yet to be downgraded from critical condition.

“She was trying to draw the dog away from attacking her three-year-old nephew, the son of her twin sister. Her twin sister also sustained serious injuries, namely, multiple lacerations to her body while defending her son from the dog. She was also transported to hospital. The boy was luckily unharmed. Their drive to protect the boy was incredibly heroic,” said Hwang.

The dog was eventually captured and is in the care of the Richmond Animal Protection Society.

The dog is owned by a boyfriend of one of the twin victims, according to the RCMP. The Victims Services unit is involved and an investigation is ongoing.

Editor’s note: The Richmond RCMP originally incorrectly identified the breed of the dog as a Rottweiler/Pitbull cross. They have sent out a correction saying it was a Rotteweiler cross.
