West Broadway has recently become home to a spacious new independent eatery, thanks to newcomer Papillon Café & Bistro.

Situated in a brand new building on the corner of West Broadway and Waterloo Street, Papillon boasts a modern interior, designed by architect Arian Mohseni. Although the café/bistro showcases many European-inspired design elements–think sleek countertops and minimalistic fixtures–the clutter-free space has a very West-coast feel to it.

Priding itself on being an authentic Italian café/bistro, the 32-seat Kitsilano eatery dishes up a variety of nourishing organic foods, sourced locally when possible. For instance, all of the café’s dairy products are from Farmhouse Natural Cheeses, in Agassiz.

Chef John Lee heads the kitchen at Papillon, and specializes in wholesome, vegan, raw cuisine. Lee has previous experience as a baker, dessert chef, and has managed his own personal chef business with clients such as the owner of Windset Farms and Clayoquot Resort.

Currently Papillon offers food that is geared towards both breakfast and lunch, and hopes to add dinner hours in the New Year.

Patrons dropping by the new locale can expect to find made-to-order organic nutrient packed smoothies, breakfast oatmeal and granola bowls, cold-pressed juices, and raw in-house desserts. Papillon even make their own walnut milk.

Also available are a range of baked goods and panini (bread supplied by The Artisan Bake Shoppe), three main salads, as well as gelato from Mario’s Gelati. Gourmet pizzas will be added to the menu in the coming weeks.

Coffee wise, Papillon uses beans roasted by Richmond-based Cafe Classics, and pours both caffeinated and decaf beverages. A variety of loose leaf teas from TWG are also listed on the menu. Papillon is in the process of obtaining their liquor license and will have a fully stocked beer and wine bar come the New Year.
