Year in Review: New Vancouver breweries 2015

It’s been a very big year for the craft brewing scene in Metro Vancouver. Indeed, 2015 has seen a staggering amount of new breweries pop-up around the city and in its surrounding communities.

Focusing on small-batch production, creativity, and community, here’s a list on Metro Vancouver’s 2015 brewery debuts.

Big Rock Urban Brewery

A recent addition to Vancouver’s thriving craft beer scene, Big Rock Urban Brewery offers brewery tours and tastings, a beer store with a growler fill bar, and also features a full-service restaurant and lounge. Having taken over the location from previous operators The Vidatron Studio, Big Rock Urban Brewery has a wide open and inviting dining space, incredibly high ceilings and wide warehouse.

Callister Brewing Co.

Callister Brewing Co. is a nano-brewery in East Vancouver specializing in small-batch brews. Part of a co-op, the craft brewery shares the Franklin Street space, taps and spacious tasting room with Brewery Creek, Brewing, Machine Ales and Real Cask.

Doan’s Craft Brewing Company

Located in the heart of East Van, this family-fun micro-brewery, which focuses on quality and craftsmanship, boasts its own onsite brewhouse and casual tasting room. Beer wise, Doan’s offers a rye IPA, an alt, a kolsch (a traditional German ale), and a dark Stout.

Dogwood Brewing

Under the leadership of brewmaster Claire Wilson Vancouver’s only certified organic brewery, Dogwood Brewing, crafts quality beers using only local and organic ingredients. In addition to seasonal specials, the South Vancouver locale carries an Organic Honey Ale, Organic IPA, Organic Fest Ale, and Organic Stout. Drop by for a tipple at the brewery’s on-site tasting room.

Fuggles & Warlock

Founded by long-time homebrewers Dan Fuggles and Tony Warlock with partner Tom Orange, Fuggles & Warlock Craftworks Brewery is now in full production. The Richmond-based brewery is currently producing, with a tasting room and retail store scheduled to open February 2016.

Hearthstone Brewery

The North Shore’s newest craft brewery has began operations, however, their tap house and pizzeria is still under construction and won’t be ready until early 2016. Beers include Red Rye Ale, Graham Cracker Ale, Common Man (lager), Chocolate Milk Stout, Burning Bridges, Bohemina Pils, Atlantic IPA,  and American Pale Ale.

Maple Meadows Brewing Company

Maple Meadows Brewing Company opened in the Spring of 2015 and since then has continued to craft North American style beers. Owned by brewer Carlo Baroccio, Meadows Brewing Company prides itself on its varied selection, small-batch brewing system, and use of fresh ingredients. The Maple Ridge outpost also features a tasting room and offers growler fills.

Off The Rail

Opening early this year, Off the Rail is a modest-sized brewhouse specializing in small-batch brews. The 5000 square foot space, located in East Van’s brewing district, is owned and operated by brewer Steve Forsyth, former owner of The Railway Club, and brews traditional styles of larger and ales. Off The Rail’s main line includes the Psyclepath Lager, Czechmate Pilsner, Derailer Pale Ale, Raybuck Red Ale and Hoppinionated IPA.

Ridge Brewing Company

This Fraser Valley micro brewery is comprised of a manufacturing area and tasting room. It produces an array of beers and provides a rotating menu of new brewed flavours. The location also offers growler refills, beer by the glass, and kegs for big shindigs.
