Tired of consumerism? Give back on Giving Tuesday

If you’re sick of hearing about mass consumerism in the form of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, perhaps Giving Tuesday is more up your alley.

The concept is essentially the “opening day of the giving season,” according to Giving Tuesday’s website and is described as a new Canadian movement for donating, giving, and volunteering.

One of the many Vancouver initiatives to donate to on Giving Tuesday is Peace Geeks, a non-profit organization that works to use technology to aid needy groups around the world. One of their apps called “Tea Time” aims to help Syrian refugees looking to settle in Vancouver by connecting them with locals to ask for advice and recommendations. It will be available in multiple languages.

“There’s so much information out there and it can be quite overwhelming and knowing where to find the information that you most need is really important,” Executive Director of Peace Geeks Renee Black told Vancity Buzz.

“Making sure to have this information accessible in one single place where you can find everything that you need is essential.”

For Giving Tuesday, Peace Geeks aims to raise $2,000 for their campaign called Give It Up 4 Peace, an initiative designed to raise money for services for Syrian refugees. The end goal is to raise $50,000 by December 13.

Peace Geeks also recently held their first ever “hack-a-thon,” where dozens of local technology, communications and marketing professionals came together to help develop websites and expand the capabilities of existing apps designed by Peace Geeks, including the Service Advisor app that connects Syrian refugees in Jordan with humanitarian services.
