An East Vancouver home for just $20,000?

In a city where people are struggling to keep up with soaring property prices, you’d imagine there would be no shortage of buyers who are interested in picking up a quaint East Vancouver home that’s available for the princely sum of $20,000.

Nevertheless, 39-year-old Ches Lam has taken to Craigslist to find a buyer for his compact East Vancouver cottage, which he converted from a 1952 workshop / garage. The 250 square foot property offers custom built features including a slide out closet, a loft-style bed and a modern kitchen; all for just a fraction of the price you’d normally expect to pay for property in one of Metro Vancouver’s fastest growing neighbourhoods.

But there’s just one catch: you have to find your own land to put it on.

Unfortunately, the bijou cottage falls short of Vancouver bylaws which dictate the minimum size for a “dwelling unit” within the city. As a result, Lam is being forced to sell providing someone can find the property a new home. As his ad states:

“There is ONE catch. The house is attached to a foundation and will need to be moved using a house raising / moving company and another foundation needs to be built at the new site. I can arrange everything to be done for the move and foundation and setup at the new location. The footprint of the house is about 12 feet by 24 feet.”

Take a look at the photos below for a sneak peek inside this compact cottage.
