$1000 bottle of Vancouver-made beer most expensive in Canada

No, your eyes do not deceive you: There is a bottle of beer on the market right now in Vancouver that will set you back $1000.

It’s called Glacial Mammoth Extinction and it is made by Storm Brewing. The East Vancouver brewer has indeed slapped a $1000 price tag on their one-litre bottles of the beer, and as the VanEast Beer Blog points out, that makes it “not only the most expensive beer on the BC market now, but [also] the most expensive beer ever sold in Canada.”

The beer has definitely stirred up a local storm, if you will.

So what’s so special about Glacial Mammoth Extinction? For the beer, Storm Brewing’s James Walton (whose title on the Storm website reads: “Brewer/Owner/Delivery Truck Driver/Mad Scientist”) took the brewery’s Imperial Flanders Red Sour Ale and first froze it, then aged it. Needless to say, it’s described as being pretty damn strong: “a 25% ABV (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) nectar that tastes more like fortified wine or Port than beer,” elaborates VanEast Beer Blog, who has had a sip of it.

But is that why it’s so freaking expensive? Nope. It’s the bottle. Each of the 10 bottles up for sale are made of handblown glass and by Brad Turner of Terminal City Glass Co-Op. The bottles come with a pendant designed and made by artist Richard Marcus.

Storm, who just marked their 21st anniversary as local craft brewers this fall, are known for their quirky flavour profiles and come-as-you-are brewery vibe. They put out beers like Basil IPA, Pineapple Paradise Pilsner, Mojito Pilsner, Apple Pie Ale, and Orange Creamsicle Ale.

Glacial Mammoth Extinction will be released on Saturday, December 5 at 10 a.m., says Storm. “For those not willing to pay $1,000 for a bottle, Storm still has about 390 litres that they’ll sell via growler fills ($80 per litre) at the brewery,” the Sun adds.
