Wow Westminster

The largest public art installation from the 2014-2016 Vancouver Biennale is being constructed on the New Westminster waterfront – a massive “W” made out of four 40-foot shipping containers.

In a series which included the “A-Maze-Ing Laughter” sculptures at English Bay, the “Trans Am Totem” on Quebec Street and the 24,000 square-foot painted silos on Granville Island, the “WOW WESTMINSTER” will be largest installation since 2014 and be a prominent fixture on the New Westminster waterfront for years to come.

Designed by the renowned Brazilian artist José Resende, the four 40-foot containers will be cantilevered together to form a 140-foot wide “W”, which will stand boldly in the New Westminster Pier Park once constructed on Monday, November 23.

Like all of the Biennale’s Open Air Museum projects, “WOW WESTMINSTER” represents the unique aspects of the region.

“Resende’s WOW WESTMINSTER is not only an interpretation of the economic activity of the Fraser River and the flow of goods through trains, ships and trucks, it’s also about capturing the energy and history of this transportation hub, the transformation of the City of New Westminster and it’s waterfront into a recreational Arts and Cultural playground,” says Marcello Dantas, the project’s senior curator. “WOW WESTMINSTER will become a respite for citizens and an icon of the City and region for decades as viewers explore the River side walk along Westminster Pier Park.”

Crews will begin installing the art at 9 a.m. on Monday at the Timber Wharf at Westminster Pier Park and should finish at about 4 p.m.
