Pull on the leg warmers and strap on your shoulder pads: Vancouver TheatreSports League‘s (VTSL) latest feature show is a radical trip back to the ’80s.
To celebrate their 35th Anniversary, VTSL is showcasing Throwback TheatreSports, a retrospective with special guests and classic and newly-created formats. Opening night had alumni Christine Lippa (If There Be Thorns) and Denalda Williams (Ties That Bind) onstage with members of the mainstage ensemble.
Host Margret Nyfors did a great job of pumping up the crowd with the help of sound improviser Laura Skelton and lights improviser Su Scarfe. Together they got everyone up for a dance party, cued every time Skelton played “Hungry Like The Wolf” by Duran Duran. Other improv highlights included a Tumbler Ridge soap opera, a visit to the McDonalds’ Floating Barge at Expo 86, and a tribute to MacGyver.
Special guests Lippa and Williams were given the spotlight throughout much of the show, and both shared hilarious stories about their time at VTSL. Every player had a moment to shine though, with great improv scenes from Angela Galanopoulos, Nathan Clark, Bill Pozzobon, Michael Robinson, Devin Mackenzie and Denise Jones.
The best part of Throwback TheatreSports is that it’s accessible for all-ages, not just those around in the ’80s. Head down to the Improv Centre for big hair and bigger laughs. Just make sure to have your dancing shoes on.
Throwback TheatreSports runs Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 p.m. from October 15 to November 21. For more information, visit www.vtsl.com.
