The Jaxx Teahouse & Lounge, a new vegetarian-inspired drinking den and eatery will open up its doors later this month, at 983 Windermere Street, in the city’s eastern suburbs.

Owner Kaija Kinney says, The Jaxx is “dedicated to healthy eating and living,” and will offer wheat-free, diary-free, white sugar-free, table salt-free and meat-free meals and beverages. With a bountiful supply of plant-based offerings, patrons can “feel safe and confident in their meal choices and enjoy good quality nutrition as opposed to fillers,” Kinney claims.

Not only is providing good quality, nutrient-dense food and drinks paramount at The Jaxx, but waste control is also of great importance. “Our to-go ware and packaging are all biodegradable and compostable. We also recycle old musical materials and make them into art,” remarks Kinney.

At The Jaxx patrons will find artwork from local artists to observe and purchase. They will also discover a space furnished by salvaged and second hand materials, which include the tables, chairs, fridges, deep freeze, and even the stove. “One person’s trash can really be someone else’s treasure… Or art project,” states Kinney.

A wide variety of wholesome small bites and meals will be available to order, like quiches, wraps, flatbreads, sandwiches, soups and salads, which will not only be all made-on-site but will also satisfy nutritional needs without the use of dairy or meat.

The drinks menu will also feature plant-derived beverages, and will include smoothies (comprised of ingredients like black cherries, beats, blueberries, banana and coconut milk), and teas, which are all handcrafted by Kinney herself, from a unique blend of natural herbs.

In addition to the lounge, where customers can come throughout the day and savour a range of whole foods, The Jaxx will also house a small boutique, which will sell a variety of products like chemical-free body scrubs, detox bath salts, art, crafts, and even love and abundance potions.

“Since I was younger I’ve always made and sold crafts. I wanted to open up a shop where I could sell my stuff, but intertwined with my love for community and healthy living,” remarks Kinney.
