ONE TO ONE: Children's Literacy Program

One To One

When an adult reads to a young child, it helps lay the foundation for literacy skills that will last them a lifetime. Sadly there are many children who receive little or no literacy support at this critical stage in their development.

Vancouver’s ONE TO ONE Literacy Society gives children the opportunity to practice their reading in a supportive environment where it’s okay to take risks, make mistakes and learn at their own pace.

ONE TO ONE (OTO) is a unique children’s literacy program that provides one-to-one reading assistance, during school hours, to elementary school students who struggle with reading. Trained volunteer tutors work with students who are identified by their teachers as needing a boost in their literacy skills. Each student spends approximately 30 minutes twice a week with their volunteer tutor.

The growth and need for ONE TO ONE is clearly proven over 25 years of operation. The program currently runs in 70 schools in Vancouver, North Vancouver and Burnaby. Three-hundred volunteer tutors work with more than 1,000 students each year – and the demand for ONE TO ONE is high, with twelve schools currently wait-listed for September 2015.

You can help!

Volunteer with ONE TO ONE – do you have two to three hours a week during the day to help a struggling young reader? Become a volunteer tutor and share the joy of reading with a child.

Donate to ONE TO ONE – the OTO program is free to students and schools and is completely funded by grants and donations. Donate to ONE TO ONE and provide a child the opportunity to develop literacy skills for life.

SVP Vancouver supports ONE TO ONE with an annual grant and helped them to expand by 11 new schools in 2014-15. With the support of SVP Partners’ time, expertise and connections, OTO is poised to make an even greater impact to improve childhood literacy in 2015/16.
