This Movember, you better get up and MOVE.

MOVE is a new fundraising initiative headed by Movember Canada. Aimed at getting people up and moving, and raising money for men’s health; the program encourages Mo Bros and Mo Sistas to exercise every day for 30 days, alongside their traditional Movember activities.

“The greatest thing that men can do for their health is be physically active,” Jesse Hayman, Director of Community Engagement at Movember Canada, told Vancity Buzz. “For both preventative and for post-treatment… the best thing you can do is keep yourself off the couch and moving.”

Movember first came to Canada in 2007. Since then, through a variety of moustache-related events, more than $675 million has been raised and over 1000 men’s health programs have opened across the country. Hayman says this year they hope Mo Bros and Mo Sistas will make a commitment, raise some money, and raise awareness of the health of others, as well as themselves.

“Whether that’s taking the stairs instead of the elevator at work, or walking to work instead of driving, whatever it is for you – it might be going to the gym every day – doing something to get yourself moving,” says Hayman. “So we hope Mo Bros and Mo Sistas will join us this year and make that commitment.”

The Movember festivities are getting a head start this year, with a launch event tonight, October 14 at Studio Records. Hayman says he hopes, with the visibility of Movember Canada and the Movember movement, more and more people will take their health into their own hands.

“We’re trying to get men off the couch, and hopefully women off the couch too,” says Hayman. “We know that’s it’s the number one thing you can do for your health, and actually moving puts our vision into action. We want to ensure men lead happier and healthier and longer lives and to do that, we’re going to get them moving. Hopefully the 30 days that you commit to in November can translate to the rest of your life and be a behaviour you continue moving forward.”
