The Chinese Communist Party has banned its 88 million members from joining golf clubs, along with a litany of other faux-pas in a new list of party discipline rules put forth this week.

Golf, gluttony and “improper sexual relations” are just a few of the prohibitions, which according to the South China Morning Post, are a sign the party is “chipping away at varied opinions.”

The crackdown is part of a strict anti-corruption drive that the party has been performing in order to cut down on the misuse of public funds.

Zhuang Deshui from the Clean Government Centre at Peking University in China told the Morning Post: “These changes will strengthen in-party governance, and make political discipline more binding. They will also better preserve the party’s image and authority, and its leaders.”

The rules state members are banned from “obtaining, holding or using membership cards for gyms, clubs, golf clubs, or various other types of consumer cards, or entering private clubs” and “an extravagant life, pleasure-seeking, the pursuit of vulgar, adverse effects.”

Golf’s connection with wealth, and past controversies where party officials were reported to have taken part in expensive rounds, was likely the impetus for the new rule. According to Reuters, a politician in south-east China was fired earlier this month for playing golf and belonging to a golf club when he was supposed to have been working.

These additional rules are part of the Communist Party’s crackdown on corruption and immorality. According to the state-run Xinhua news agency, “the new 8-article regulation mainly concerns itself with a moral ethical code that members must abide by.”

Already this year, government has shut down 66 golf courses and has more aggressively enforced a 10-year-old ban on building new ones.
